I provide support and services to SCPS lower school students in several ways.
Classroom Guidance
This year I will focus our lessons on our honor code. We will focus on the four traits: HONOR, TRUTH, RESPECT, and SCHOLARSHIP. Overall, our goal is to develop Christ-like behavior. Be sure to visit my door and learn how we can be "C. E. O." 's (Christ-like Examples for Others)! Our focus bible verse is Ephesians 4:15, "Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ..."
At times, the homeroom teacher will suggest a topic based on a particular need for her classroom. I will continue to work with the students on these personal/ social issues.
Individual Counseling
Sometimes students benefit from individual counseling sessions. This is meant to be a support for the student. Typically this counseling lasts 3 or 4 sessions. At times, students are referred to a professional counselor/ therapist. I maintain a list of christian counseling centers that work with school aged children. Please be in touch ([email protected]) if you would like a copy of this list.
Group Sessions
Working in small groups can be especially helpful for students. In the past, I have occasionally offered small groups. Some of which focused on friendship skills and dealing with divorce. Groups are not currently being offered.
Conferences and Student Support Team
I am available to conference with parents and teachers regarding a student's needs. I strive to work as part of the support team for your child. Conference time can be a valuable tool for teachers and parents to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the student. A plan of action can be created or recommendations may be made to help the student achieve success. Continuous monitoring helps ensure that we are working together for the student. Students may be referred for educational testing to determine if a specific learning need exists. Our Learning Support Center is available to students that are referred and meet the criteria. Joan Connelly is our Learning Support Center teacher.
